Have you noticed how bare legs are the fashion right now?  It's not just during hot weather - it continues during cool weather too.  However, having beautiful sleek legs is more difficult for us and for most women past 50.  Spider veins, veins, blotches and pigment loss are all issues to be dealt with.  About half of all people 50 and older are affected by varicose veins, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services. In addition there are several other vein problems including spider veins - the tiny bluish ones usually in an area on the legs. While they're usually not harmful, many women consider them unsightly.

Legs can still look more beautiful with the right approach. Try these fixes. (Yes, exercise is good too.)

Cosmetic Products
Leg Makeup
These products have really improved. They are easier to apply, last longer and don't rub off on your clothes.  You wash them off at night with soap and water.   You can match your own skin tone or go slightly darker for a tanned look. They work much like foundation makeup works on your face to conceal flaws. Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs is the popular spray on.  Dermablend Professional Leg and Body Cover is especially designed to conceal veins, scars and bruises.

Self-Tanning Lotions and Sprays
Darkening your legs can minimize the colors of blotches and spider veins by creating an overall tan look.  Tanning booths or salon applied sprays can work for this.  Of course, a variety of sprays and lotions are also available for home use. Finding one that won't turn you orange is important. We like St Tropez which has a system of exfoliating and then rubbing on the lotion.  They offer thin rubber gloves to help spread around the lotion which seems to give more evenness and control.  The tone is more towards brown and doesn't appear orange.

Panty Hose
Toeless Pantyhose
As you know from years of wearing pantyhose, legs always look better with them than without.  The problem is that with a peep toe shoe or sandals, the unsightly pantyhose toe cover shows.  Now there are a few clever toeless styles to help with this. Control Top Toeless Pantyhose by Hanes is a well priced option. Donna Karan Hosiery: The Nudes Sheer To Waist Pantyhose is super-fine to look virtually invisible but still effective giving a smooth glow to the legs. It gives you a look closer to bare.  With both of these, one has to be sure that the edge of the toe hole is concealed in the shoe.

Medical Procedures
Cosmetic medical procedures for spider and reticular veins — which aren’t covered by insurance — are available.  Those looking to rid their legs of the purplish spider veins or thicker, blue reticular veins can choose sclerotherapy, a procedure that injects medicine into the veins and causes them to shrink, according to Dr. Karimi, a vascular surgeon at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare

When varicose veins begin to cause discomfort or become painful Karimi recommends seeking medical attention. Read more about medical procedures at Knotty issue: Many women over 50 can suffer from varicose veins at BTrue Magazine for Courier Communications.
