The skin on lips is thinner and doesn’t have oil glands to protect the skin from the elements, unlike skin elsewhere on the body. The lips become dryer with age and they get chapped simply from licking your lips repetitively, certain medications and smoking. Exposure to extreme cold weather makes the lips dry while hot weather dehydrates, and sunlight’s ultraviolet rays can damage unprotected lips. Mature lips need extra care.
In this article I share my suggestions both personally and professionally to help eliminate chapped lips and achieve a more youthful appearance through the use of cosmetic products especially formulated for the lips.
Condition your lips.
I moisturize my lips at bedtime with a healing ointment such as Aquaphor or Shea Butter Cream Oil, a natural alternative with organic whole herbs (Heavenly Healing Products; to order phone: 323.573.0691) Both products can be used on extra dry areas of the body too! In the morning exfoliate by rubbing lips gently with your face cloth, leaving your lips feeling soft and smooth.
Protect your lips.
Lip balms with SPF and without harsh chemicals used on a daily basis will pay off in the long run to reduce annoying lines that develop with age and diminish deeper lines. Remember the skin on lips need sun and wind protection too. Limit medicated lip balms with camphor and menthol which can irritate sensitive skin. Two of my favorites to try are Cleure’s lip balm and Burt’s Bees Res-Q Balm SPF 15.
Hydrate your lips.
Drinking water will keep the body, skin, and lips hydrated. Try to drink at least 9, 8 oz. glasses of water a day and indoors use a humidifier to keep the air, your skin, and lips moist.
Wear lip gloss.
Finish with a lip gloss to give your lips a luscious radiant look! Remember harmful chemicals can be absorbed through the skin, so I prefer to use non toxic natural and organic lip glosses. I like Juice Beauty’s Organic SPF Mineral Tinted Lip Gloss. It works well on any skin tone. I also like Philosophy’s Supernatural Superglossy Lip Gloss SPF 15 which has antioxidants while adding a great deal of shine. Both products are at sephora.com.
Kiss, kiss, good bye chapped lips!
