• You may not think osteoporosis is something you’ll ever have to worry about, but the reality is that one in three women age 50 and older will likely break a bone at some point because of osteoporosis. One study estimates that there are 8.9 million osteoporotic fractures every year worldwide, which is equal to a bone breaking about every three seconds.

Even people who have eaten well, avoided smoking and excessive alcohol, and been active throughout their lives often find themselves dealing with osteoporosis after age 50, and with valid reason. No matter how active you were or are, the body’s process of naturally rebuilding bone slows drastically after age 50, yet the normal rate of removing old bone still continues. This quickly creates a bone density deficit leading to porous bones that are more vulnerable to breaks. Unfortunately, most women don’t find out how weak their bones are until they get a bone scan at an annual physical—or until they actually break a bone.

If you are concerned about your bone density, the game isn’t over. There is still hope for rebuilding your bone density, and you have options.

Don’t immediately rely on medication to fix the problem.

Almost everyone who has osteoporosis or osteopenia is prescribed one or several prescription pharmaceuticals that try to stimulate bone growth, slow bone loss, or both. The downsides are the side effects and the cost, but the worst bottom line is that none of the prescriptions available now can actually fix your bones to the point of reversing osteoporosis. They make a difference, but don’t solve the real problem. Before trying any new medication, do your own research on the side effects and have a conversation with your doctor about whether the impact of these drugs on your body is really worth it.

    1. Check out osteogenic loading, which can prevent and even reverse osteoporosis.

Just a few years ago, a new technology was developed that not only prevents osteoporosis, but can completely reverse it. The system is based on osteogenic loading, a short set of intense resistance moves that trigger the body’s natural bone growth responses. The process is completely painless, sweat-free, and takes less than 10 minutes once a week. The latest development in this technology is called Spectrum, which goes beyond the first generation of osteogenic technology to work every key area of the body more safely and with maximum impact. Though the process only takes a few easy minutes, the body continues naturally building new bone for days after every session. Within just a few months, many people have reversed their osteoporosis and cancelled joint replacements. The proof isn’t just in the way they feel—it’s in their bone density scans and x-rays.

    2. Sneak a bone-boosting power superfood into your diet.

Chia seeds are one of the healthiest foods on the planet, and they’re fun to snack on any time, anywhere. Eat them alone, roll them with a little almond butter and freeze for a rich popsicle, sneak them into soups or smoothies, and even add them to pudding. Chia seeds are packed with bone-healthy nutrients such as calcium, fiber, minerals, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids. Ounce for ounce, chia seeds have five times more calcium than milk, so if you’re vegan, they’re a great source for the bone building nutrient.

    3. Take a walk in the sun.

Walking doesn’t have enough intense impact to trigger significant bone growth, but it is good for your joint and cardiovascular health. In addition to lifting your spirits, taking a long stroll in the sun has other health benefits, too. Soaking up a little sunshine makes your body produce vitamin D, an essential nutrient for the absorption of calcium. If you prefer to stick to the shade or live in a cloudy climate, you can also get vitamin D from eating salmon, tuna, cheese, and egg yolks.

No matter what shape you’re in, it’s never too late to turn back the clock on your bone health and start rebuilding healthy bone quickly. Osteoporosis has become an epidemic that affects about 54 million Americans (according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation), but you don’t have to be part of that statistic. Before going straight for a prescription, learn more about how small changes such as adding delicious super-foods into your diet and walking more often can change the way you feel, and check out osteogenic loading. It’s simple, easy, and has changed lives all across America.
