This is The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.  Richard Gere has now been added to the accomplished actors in this sequel to ‘The Best Marigold Hotel.”  (He’s been a heartthrob for many of us ever since American Gigolo.)

The excitable and always optimistic hotelier, Sonny, wants to expand but of course complications ensue for him and for his continuing guests. He bills his  hotel in India “for the Elderly and Beautiful.”

He joins the other guests Maggie Smith, Judith Dench, Bill Nighy, Lillete Dubey and Celia Imrie.  Bill Nighy and Judith Dench continue their relationship on the verge of romance.  (It’s nice to see her softer side after being M in James Bond movies.)

The other relationships and the clever dialogue also continue. It’s one of the few movies that treat aging with humor,  respect and enjoyment.  Who cannot love the style (and the diction) of these marvelous actors.  After spending so much time with Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey, it’s fun to see her in another character entirely. She’s the co-manager of the hotel and privy to everyone’s secrets.

And then there is, of course, the grand Bollywood dance finale.

    Synopsis

THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL is the expansionist dream of Sonny (Dev Patel), and it’s making more claims on his time than he has available, considering his imminent marriage to the love of his life, Sunaina (Tina Desai).  Sonny has his eye on a promising property now that his first venture, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful, has only a single remaining vacancy – posing a rooming predicament for fresh arrivals Guy (Richard Gere) and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig). Evelyn and Douglas (Judi Dench and Bill Nighy) have now joined the Jaipur workforce, and are wondering where their regular dates for Chilla pancakes will lead, while Norman and Carol (Ronald Pickup and Diana Hardcastle) are negotiating the tricky waters of an exclusive relationship, as Madge (Celia Imrie) juggles two eligible and very wealthy suitors. Perhaps the only one who may know the answers is newly installed co-manager of the hotel, Muriel (Maggie Smith), the keeper of everyone’s secrets. As the demands of a traditional Indian wedding threaten to engulf them all, an unexpected way forward presents itself.
