• Women who regularly drink coffee are less likely to suffer depression, according to a new study. The study by Harvard University researchers showed that women who drink 2-3 cups of coffee a day had 15% less depression than those who did not it. Drink 4 or more cups a day and depression can be reduced by 20%. This is particularly significant because depression is twice as likely to affect women as men. Researchers were lead to do the study after it was discovered in smaller studies that women who regularly drank coffee had fewer suicides.

Caffeine, the world’s favorite stimulant, temporarily boosts alertness and often improves people’s moods. But don’t worry if coffee isn’t your cup of tea – tea and chocolate both contain caffeine. Caffeine can have it’s downside. Too much can cause insomnia, nervousness, stomach upset and a rapid heartbeat in some people. Its virtues have to be assessed with its effect on individuals.

These new findings published in the Archives of Internal Medicine are based new analysis of 50,0000 women by the National Institute of Health. They looked at data from The Nurses’ Health Study, the study which has been the source of so much new and important information on women’s health. That federally funded study studied the nurses from 1980 to 2004.

Unfortunately, no association between decaffeinated coffee and less depression risk were found.
